What we know is…

The HIV infection in North and Central Brooklyn is 50% higher than those of other Brooklyn neighborhoods. The highest reported incidence is in the Bedford Stuyvesant- Crown Heights (zip codes of 11213 in Crown Heights; 11212 in Brownsville; 11216 in Bedford Stuyvesant; 11233 in Stuyvesant Heights/Oceanhill, and 11238 in Prospect Heights) followed by the East Flatbush-Flatbush area, the Downtown-Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope areas, the Williamsburg-Bushwick area, and East New York.

By age and ethnicity, affected persons have been generally Black and Hispanic adults (19,038 or 86% of the Persons Living With HIV/AIDS in the borough), ages 30-59 (18, 418 or 83% of Brooklyn's Persons Living With HIV/AIDS population), although over 700 cases of ages 13 and under and 223 teens were infected by the virus from June 2002 to December 2004.
