In this installation, books held together by large clamps are building bricks. Each clamp frames together 15-20 books to create fairly even blocks, which are arranged into a free-standing structure. There is no mortar; the basic materials and the simplicity of the technique are apparent.
The books' cultural content is inevitably a rich component here. The installation quotes the aesthetics of books organized on shelves. In the library, we often choose a book by its exterior. But here, the interior remains unreachable. The relationship between books and architecture is also reversed here. Normally library walls shelter books, but in this case the books themselves construct a wall.

 Einat Imber is a Brooklyn-based Israeli artist. Her work has been exhibited at the John Connelly Presents Gallery in New York, NY, the Current Gallery in Baltimore, MD, and the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild in Woodstock, NY. She received her BFA from Cooper Union.
