At Gleason's Gym
by Ted Lewin

These illustrations are from the picture book At Gleason's Gym, which I wrote and illustrated. It is the result of a year and a half spent observing and recording events at Gleason's Gym where legendary boxing champions like Muhammad Ali, Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray trained.

The photographs that I took at the gym were the raw material I used to make my watercolors. I projected the slide images on a screen and looked at them as I painted so that it was as if I was painting from life. It was especially helpful because the light in Gleason's Gym is so special. Sometimes there is bright daylight coming in the big front windows. Other times there's a dark corner illuminated by florescent bulbs."

My history as a professional wrestler and the time I spent in the ring gave me a unique perspective on this project.
