Planning for Cortelyou Branch began in 1969. However it was not until 1983 after years of effort by Flatbush residents, that construction was completed and the branch opened. The Cortelyou Branch serves a diverse community with children's programming, help for those wishing to improve how they speak English, in addition to serving the needs of area public, parochial and private school children, in addition to college students.
